When was the last time you wrote an actual letter? Thanks to a new Willie Stargell forever stamp, now may be a good time to dust off some fabulous stationery and write an overdue letter to loved ones. And why not do it August 8th? My co-worker and friend, Frances Weller, came up with the idea. She is the late baseball legend's sister-in-law. Her twin sister Margaret married Mr. Stargell and continues to make significant contributions in the battle against kidney disease through The Willie Stargell Foundation.
Every year, the foundation holds a big golf tournament in Wilmington, NC, to celebrate Stargell's life and to help raise money for those who are ill. So... why 8 on 8? Pittsburgh Pirates fans may know already that Stargell had a thing for the number 8. Or, perhaps, 8s had a thing for Stargell. Fran said it was unintentional, but Stargell was assigned the lucky number. And then, when he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, it happened on 8/8/88. The number 8 is auspicious in some Asian cultures - it's often associated with wealth and fortune. I can't promise you'll strike it rich by writing a letter this August 8th, but it would certainly be a nice way to boost the struggling postal service. And, it would be a lovely surprise to the person on the other end of your letter.

I was recently thrilled to get an invite to the home of some friends for the season finale of The Bachelorette. This is funny to me for a couple of reasons, but mostly because I'm not a huge fan of reality TV. But... how could I turn down an opportunity to hang out? Rebekah, Deborah, and Jennifer (aka The Three Divas) put together a fun night for Wendy Reavis and me. It was like a little pajama jam, filled with breakfast goodies and a little drama. And by little, I mean little. The Bachelorette didn't have nearly as much drama as I had hoped! Read what The Three Divas had to say about our night Anyway... I had such a blast... and the food was absolutely divine. We took pictures as if we were on the show and made a whole night of it. What kind of goofy things do you do with your friends? I haven't had one of these nights in a LONG time, but I am so glad I did. Would love to hear your stories! And...bonus! I asked The Three Divas to share a little recipe from that night. Of all things, I love their whipped butter. It just made our pancake breakfast-for-dinner even that much more delicious! How sweet! The other day my chief photographer, Ryan, made a joke that his girls now insist on going to Staples every week to buy school supplies. This, of course, is thanks to our weekly segments. The girls actually plan their trips to see what they can get on sale! As a kid, I loved getting new school supplies... especially a new school box and pencils. Is that weird? I think all kids are a little like that, right? Anyway, I told Ryan this: "Sunday is for Staples." See the breakdown of the deals WHY? Sunday is the day Staples rolls out its sales. You can grab the ad from the Sunday paper. Or you can just wake up and walk into the store. The benefit to getting the ad from the Sunday paper is that sometimes there's an extra savings coupon, like $5 off or something. This week, I spent $2.50 on about $41 worth of paper, pens, pencils, erasers and notepads. That's about a 94-percent savings! This week we went to CVS, Staples, Harris Teeter and Office Depot. We actually got a lot of freebies at CVS, including a $20 glucose monitor and Allegra. I'm fairly certain everything was less than $1. In all, we spent $13 for $121 worth of items. |
