Michelle was born in South Korea and adopted six months later to a wonderful family in Missouri. In 1998, Michelle visited Korea with an adoption agency and discovered she had an intact birth family. Her Korean parents and two of her three sisters currently live near Seoul and Busan. One of her sisters Hyun Jung lives minutes away from her home in Seattle.
Michelle has since taken many volunteer trips to Korea, where she would introduce Korea to adoptive families, rock babies to sleep in the orphanage, meet unwed mothers and even play the role of "stork" to bring orphans back to the United States. Since 1994, she's spent many summers volunteering at Korean heritage camps throughout the Midwest.
In 2010, Michelle launched a project to help foster children find permanent homes in Missouri. After several successful placements, members of Congress recognized Michelle with an Angels in Adoption award. In 2011, Michelle participated in Holt International's International Forum and accepted an invitation to speak at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
Michelle still volunteers with adoption groups and writes for Holt International. If you'd like her to speak at an event or meet with your family, send a request. She and Hyun Jung often work together in advancing immigrant and adoption causes.
