When was the last time you wrote an actual letter? Thanks to a new Willie Stargell forever stamp, now may be a good time to dust off some fabulous stationery and write an overdue letter to loved ones. And why not do it August 8th? My co-worker and friend, Frances Weller, came up with the idea. She is the late baseball legend's sister-in-law. Her twin sister Margaret married Mr. Stargell and continues to make significant contributions in the battle against kidney disease through The Willie Stargell Foundation.
Every year, the foundation holds a big golf tournament in Wilmington, NC, to celebrate Stargell's life and to help raise money for those who are ill. So... why 8 on 8? Pittsburgh Pirates fans may know already that Stargell had a thing for the number 8. Or, perhaps, 8s had a thing for Stargell. Fran said it was unintentional, but Stargell was assigned the lucky number. And then, when he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, it happened on 8/8/88. The number 8 is auspicious in some Asian cultures - it's often associated with wealth and fortune. I can't promise you'll strike it rich by writing a letter this August 8th, but it would certainly be a nice way to boost the struggling postal service. And, it would be a lovely surprise to the person on the other end of your letter.

I actually just wrote a letter to my daughter in West Virginia on Monday. I just felt the need to tell her things in a letter not via a text, phone call, facebook post etc. It was something that felt more personal and I was able to put more of my heart and thoughts into the words written on a white piece of notebook paper. I will certainly write another letter for 8/8/12. Letters are much more personal.
