I haven't "graduated" anything for a long time, so it was a blast to gear up for our Citizens Academy graduation tonight at the New Hanover County Commissioners meeting.
More than two dozen of us were allowed the opportunity to learn more about our county government. We met three hours a week and listened to department heads and leaders within the county. To some people, it may not sound exhilarating, but you know what? It was. I was fascinated every session, it was the highlight of my week and it was an incredible opportunity to meet county leaders face-to-face. I'm not just talking about the county leaders you see on TV, but perhaps the ones who work on the budget, maintain our buildings or help our local veterans. County Manager Bruce Shell said we started out as strangers but ended up as friends. As silly as it sounds, it's true! I am so glad to have been a part of the first-ever CIA (Citizens in Action) group. In a few months, the county will begin taking applications for a second academy. I recommend it to everyone! It's really a great opportunity!
