You could've packed your patience, or you could've just stayed home. The latter may have been a better option this weekend because we are talking SHEER GRIDLOCK. Oh, you didn't want to spend 6 hours in traffic on a beautiful Saturday afternoon?
If you had to cross over the Cape Fear, you were probably stuck in traffic for two hours or more. 911 dispatchers said the closing of the Memorial Bridge put a strain on their system Saturday.
Sunday, we hear, is looking better. Maybe because people were too scared to leave their neighborhoods. Either way, we're trying to find out what's happening. Sanah Sayani will have a LIVE report tonight.

All should be back to normal by Monday morning. Let's hope. In the meantime, here were some of your gripes coming into the newsroom (names omitted):
Did you have any run-ins? We want to know how it's going out there.

The traffic was horrible Saturday all day. My husband heard it announced that the bridge would be closed Saturday and Sunday BUT had no idea the headache we would run in to. We were sitting in traffic on Highway 17 before the Leland exit, trying to get to the Isabell Holmes bridge. Once there we than ran into MORE traffic due to the road construction downtown. Obviously we were late to an appointment. When we were ready to head back to Brunswick County - low and behold - the traffic was even worse than before! We ended up going down side streets and headed towards Carolina Beach, we road the Fort Fisher Ferry back to Brunswick County. I will have to admit that was nice and relaxing (at least it brought our blood pressure back down to normal). My husband raised a very important question about the bridge closure, road construction during a very busy weekend. His question...."Wonder who the Rocket Scientist was who thought this one out." Well - all we can say is hope next weekend is better.

I am so sorry to hear that, Beth! I've heard horror stories - people running out of gas... emergency crews not being able to cross... someone couldn't visit their mom in hospice... even a bride was late to her own wedding. Can you believe all of that?

How difficult is it to correctly report bridge maintenance schedules? This morning WECT reported that both N AND S lanes of the Oak Island bridge would be closed from 9:00 am today til 3:00 pm Thursday. I drove miles out of my way to get onto the island and then was told the bridge hadn't closed as of noon. I called the Town of OI and was told WECT had reported incorrectly. Instead, only one lane would be closed at a time so expect delays. When I left the island at 4:45, there was no indication of a closing/maintenance of any kind. ???? Whas up????

It is sad news and nightmare that the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge was closed and the traffic was horrible. These kinds of moves from the government side are really bad for the society and hope they will provide us an alternative solution.
